My Spiritual Travelogue - Visit to Shri Vaishnavi Temple in Ambattur, Chennai

Shri Vaishnavi Temple is situated in Ambattur, a residential neighbourhood in Chennai Metropolitan Area.  It is about 22 KM from Chennai city on the western side and is well connected by both railways and roadways.  The Metropolitan Transport Corpn. runs number of regular and deluxe buses through Thirumullaivoyil from all parts of the Chennai city. Thirumullaivoyil also has got a railway station on the Chennai - Bangalore route and is located in the midst of the big industrial towns of Ambattur and Avadi.

This temple is situated within a lush green 50 acre private land.  The main Arch on the road side can be seen by anybody while passing through.

This temple was built in 1954 by Sri Parthasarathy, son of Sri Srinivasa Iyenger who was a famous Indian national leader.  Sri Parthasarathy is also known as Swami Anvananda or Sri Sadhu Parthasarathy and he got an idol of Sri Vaishnavi Devi as a gift from some unknown person who was not interested in preserving it and wanted to give it to a right person who can preserve it with its spiritual fervor.  Thus, the temple for Shri Vaishnavi Devi (a powerful and beautiful Shakthi deity) was built by Sri Parthasarathy and consecrated in the year 1954.  The main deity is housed in a hall.  There are separate shrines for Lord Ganesha,  Muruga, Dakshinamurthy.  Navagraha idols are also installed in this temple.   Idols of Sri Maheswari, Sri Narayani, Sri Brahmi and Sri Anjaneyar are also there in the outer praharam.    In the sanctum there is beautiful panchaloka icon of Sri Shanmugar (having six faces) and his consorts Valli and Devayani.  Photos of Sri Seshadri Swamigal, Sri Ramana Maharishi, Sri Vallimalai Swamigal, Sri Arunagirinathar and the founder Swami Anvanandaji are also kept there.  An icon of Sri Venugana Krishnar is also installed there.

At the entrance of the temple, there are two idols of Hayagreevar and Agastiyar.

Entrance to the temple

Daily poojas are performed in the temple, with special pujas on Thursdays, Fridays, Full moon days, days of moolam and pooram stars of every month conducted routinely throught the year.

On these days, devotees can perform the rituals by themselves.  Special alankars bedecked with appropriate ornaments are adorned to the deity on festival days.  Navarathri festival is an important festival in this temple when devotees in large number throng the temple from various parts of the land to offer prayers and take part in the festivities.  Lot of big trees surround the temple premises give a lush greenery sight and give a serene atmosphere inside.  The temple and the surrounding area are well maintained and looks clean.
